Birla urges lawmakers to be voice of last person in society
Kolkata, July 5 -- Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Saturday asked lawmakers to be "the voice of the last person in society" and underscored that leadership is built through reasoned arguments and constructive plans. He also urged government representatives to listen to the ideas and suggestions of lawmakers with a positive mindset.
"We are not merely legislators for our specific constituencies. While developing our own area is our primary responsibility, the responsibility for the aspirations and development of the entire state also rests upon our shoulders," Birla said in his address to the West Bengal assembly after the conclusion of the orientation programme for Bengal MLAs.
This is the first time in 22 years that a Lok Sabha Speaker addressed the Assembly during such an event.
Birla also emphasised on simplicity and pointed out that "public representatives derive their strength from the trust reposed in them by citizens."
Birla, who is serving a rare second term as Lok Sabha Speaker, also said the government should view MLAs' ideas positively....
