Bihar women's body seeks action on min's husband over recent remarks
Dehradun, Jan. 4 -- Bihar women commission has written to Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, asking him to take action with regard to controversial remarks made by state women and child development minister Rekha Arya's husband Girdhari Lal Sahu at a gathering in Someshwar assembly segment, that was widely circulated on social media.
Confirming the development, Bihar women commission chairperson Apsara said she has written to Dhami for action against Sahu's remarks.
In the letter to Dhami, Apsara said, "The statement made by Girdhari Lal Sahu, husband of Uttarakhand's Minister for Women's Empowerment and Child Development, Rekha Arya, regarding the women of Bihar, is extremely shameful and condemnable. His statement...has deeply hurt the women of Bihar, and they feel insulted."
"The Bihar State Women's Commission, Patna, strongly condemns his statement. The Commission considers this statement a direct attack on the self-respect of the women of Bihar," she said.
After backlash on social media, Sahu, in a video message said the programme was a welcome ceremony for women and elderly persons, and that during his address he had referred to the marriage of a friend. He claimed that the Opposition and the Congress had "distorted" his remarks and presented them out of context in the media.
The Uttarakhand Mahila Congress on Friday staged a protest outside the minister's house in Dehradun.
Uttarakhand Mahila Congress president Jyoti Rautela said the statement reflects the distorted and regressive mindset of the BJP, which reduces the dignity of women to a monetary value.
"Sahu's statement is condemnable and reflects the mindset of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which views women as commodities meant to be bought and sold. For this reason, Rekha Arya and her husband must apologise to women across the entire country," she said.
BJP state media in-charge Manveer Singh Chauhan said the Congress has been doing politics as Arya's husband has already issued a clarification about his reference. "The Congress should refrain from its petty politics. It shows their frustration over repeated poll losses," he said....
