Big cat kills woman hours after fatal attack on farmer in Dudhwa Buffer Zone
LAKHIMPUR KHERI, June 16 -- Just hours after killing a 60-year old farmer in Ramnagar Kalan village under Bhira police limits in Dudhwa buffer zone on Sunday, the errant big cat struck again, attacking a 40-year-old woman, Kokila a resident of Khalepurwa village under Majhgain range of Dudhwa buffer zone. The critically injured woman succumbed to her injuries while being taken to the hospital, officials said.
According to reports, the incident occurred on Monday evening when Kokila had gone to collect grass from a field.
A big cat, which villagers claimed was a tiger, allegedly emerged suddenly and attacked her, inflicting severe injuries. She was rushed for medical treatment but succumbed to her injuries on the way to the hospital.
Her family members immediately rushed her to a hospital in Palia for treatment, but doctors declared her dead on arrival, officials said.
Deputy director of Dudhwa buffer zone Kirti Chaudhary confirmed the death and said the officials were yet to determine whether the animal involved was a tiger or a leopard. However, she noted that the latest attack appeared to have been carried out by the same big cat that killed an elderly man in Ramnagar Kalan village, located just 2-3 kilometres from the site of Monday's incident.
She said the forest department has installed five cages and 14 camera traps to track the movement of the big cat in the area. Chaudhary added that she had also spoken to the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) to seek permission for tranquilising the animal if the situation warrants such action.
