BHU workshop highlights importance of pre-historic archaeology
VARANASI, April 12 -- A three-day national workshop on prehistoric archaeology concluded at BHU on Saturday, with experts stressing the need to preserve early human heritage. Titled "Stories in Stone: A Workshop on Prehistoric Lithics", the event was organised by the department of ancient Indian history, culture and archaeology as part of its centenary celebrations.
Director of the UP department of archaeology, Dr Renu Dwivedi, attended as chief guest. She highlighted the importance of studying prehistoric archaeology and urged participants to contribute to its preservation. Head of the department, prof Mahesh Prasad Ahirwar, said the workshop proved highly useful for research in prehistoric studies. He noted that scholars from 18 universities across 12 states were trained in techniques of stone tool-making used by early humans and gained insights into their cultural practices. Keynote speaker prof Shanti Pappu stressed the value of field and experimental research, while prof Sushma Ghidiyal, dean of the faculty of arts at BHU, underlined the importance of such workshops for students and researchers.
