Betting racket accused shoots self dead 'fearing arrest'
MEERUT, March 8 -- A 40-year-old man allegedly died by suicide after shooting himself with a country-made pistol when a police team arrived at his residence in Bulandshahr late on Friday night. The deceased, Manish Bansal, lived in the Hanuman Tila locality under the Khurja Kotwali police station area.
According to police and family members, Bansal had earlier been arrested in connection with running an alleged illegal betting racket. His family claimed that he took the extreme step due to fear of being arrested again.
Family members said around three months ago, two videos of Bansal had gone viral on social media. In the clips, he purportedly accused the local police administration of putting unnecessary pressure on him and attempting to extort money. Since the videos surfaced, police had reportedly been searching for him.
On Friday night, a police team reached Bansal's house to conduct a raid. His wife, Sakshi, said at around 11pm several policemen arrived and began knocking on the door. Bansal's father opened the door, following which the officers started asking about his whereabouts.
During the commotion, Bansal allegedly shot himself in the temple with a country-made pistol, reportedly fearing arrest. Hearing the gunshot, family members rushed to the room and found him lying in a pool of blood.
After receiving information about the incident, station house officer of Khurja Kotwali and other police personnel reached the spot and began an investigation.
Bansal's wife and other family members accused the police of exerting undue pressure on him and claimed that the fear of arrest drove him to suicide. Sakshi said after Bansal posted videos criticising the police a few months ago, officers had repeatedly visited their house and were pressuring him to surrender.
Responding to the allegations, circle officer Shobhit Kumar said a detailed investigation is underway and all aspects related to the suicide are being examined....
