Ban on night travel near Purnagiri temple
Rudrapur, June 23 -- In light of the increasing risk of accidents due to heavy rains, the Champawat district administration has imposed a ban on night-time vehicular movement along the Purnagiri temple road in Tanakpur, according to an official statement. The decision, effective immediately, has restricted traffic on the route between 6 am and 6 pm during the monsoon season.
The order issued on Saturday evening cited recent landslides and blockages, including one on Tuesday night at Batnagarh nullah, which left the road covered in debris and temporarily inaccessible. "Although the road has since been cleared, the risk of further incidents during the monsoon cannot be ruled out. In view of pilgrim safety, travel between 6 pm and 6 am will remain strictly prohibited," the order said.
On Wednesday, a major landslide near Batnagarh - about 12 km from Tanakpur - blocked the road, stranding approximately 5,000 pilgrims on both sides. On Friday, a local trader from Tanakpur died after he slipped at the same site. The route was reopened on Saturday.
The Purnagiri temple road is considered particularly vulnerable during the rainy season due to the presence of six seasonal nullahs (streams), which often swell and overflow, posing a threat to travellers, said officials.
In a separate incident on Sunday, a 22-year-old biker, identified as Taslim from Khatima area of US Nagar, was swept away while trying to cross the Kirora nullah. He was rescued following a joint operation by police and SDRF, an official said....
