Meerut, Aug. 11 -- A 34-year-old Kanwar pilgrim from Baghpat was killed and his companion seriously injured after their motorcycle crashed into a divider on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway in Saharanpur's Badgaon area early Monday, while the two were reportedly travelling towards Haridwar to collect Ganga water. The accident has raised questions over the entry of motorcycles onto the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway despite a ban on two-wheelers on the Baghpat-Lakhanor stretch, particularly during the ongoing Kanwar pilgrimage when thousands of devotees are travelling towards Haridwar. The deceased was identified as Mohit Pal, a resident of Chaprauli in Baghpat district. According to police and his family, Pal had left home early on Monday morning with another youth on a motorcycle to collect Ganga water for the Kanwar pilgrimage. Their motorcycle apparently went out of control near Dalheri in Saharanpur's Badgaon area and rammed into the divider. Both riders sustained serious injuries. Police reached the spot and took the injured men to the Community Health Centre in Nanauta. Doctors declared Pal dead, while his companion, who was seriously injured, was referred to the district hospital, where he is undergoing treatment. Pal's father, Shobin Pal Kashyap, said that police personnel informed the family about the accident over the phone. Relatives rushed to the hospital but were told that Pal's body had already been sent for a post-mortem examination. Pal, 34, is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son aged around three years, his father said. Deoband circle officer Amit Singh said two motorcycle-borne men from Baghpat had crashed into a divider on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway in the Badgaon area. Police are investigating the circumstances of the crash, including the manner in which the motorcycle entered the restricted expressway.
