Badaun CBG plant shooting: SIT constituted, CM orders in-depth probe
Lucknow, March 15 -- The Uttar Pradesh government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the fatal shooting of two senior officials of a compressed biogas (CBG) plant operated by Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited in Budaun district earlier this week.
The incident occurred on March 12 at the CBG plant located in Sajni village, under the Musajhag police station limits, where a former contractor allegedly opened fire on two officials, killing them on the spot.
Taking serious note of the incident, chief minister Yogi Adityanath ordered the constitution of an SIT to conduct a comprehensive investigation.
According to an official statement issued on March 14, the SIT will function under the chairmanship of the divisional commissioner of Bareilly Division and will conduct an in-depth probe into all aspects of the case.
The chief minister said in a post on X that a fair and transparent investigation would be carried out.
"The SIT will thoroughly investigate all aspects related to the incident. If any negligence or conspiracy comes to light, the responsible individuals will be identified and strict action will be taken," the chief minister said.
On the CM's instructions, a permanent police outpost has been established on the CBG plant premises and additional security measures have been put in place to prevent similar incidents and ensure the safety of industrial establishments.
The victims were identified as Sudhir Kumar Gupta, 55, chief project manager (DGM level) from Noida, and Harshit Mishra, 40, assistant manager from Bareilly. According to police, both officials were shot multiple times in what investigators described as a targeted attack.
The accused, Ajay Pratap Singh, was reportedly a former vendor associated with the plant, whose contract had been terminated by the management due to unsatisfactory performance. Police said Singh allegedly entered the plant premises armed with an automatic weapon and fired at the two officials.
Preliminary investigation suggests the accused was angry for being blacklisted and removed from his role at the facility. Reports also indicate that one of the deceased officials had earlier lodged a complaint with local authorities in January 2026, alleging threats from the accused. Following the incident, action was taken against local police personnel and some officers were suspended for alleged negligence. The accused was later arrested by police.
According to officials, he was shot in the legs during an encounter before being taken into custody....
