Bada Mangal Bhandaras now on Saturdays too
Lucknow, May 17 -- The trend of Bada Mangal Bhandaras being organised on Saturdays - besides the regulation Tuesdays - is catching on fast. Several community groups and local committees organised Bhandaras across the capital to accommodate the massive weekend crowds.
While the core festival remains anchored to Tuesdays, organisers opted for a Saturday expansion to ensure that people can hop in to cherish the prasad on the another day of week also associated with Lord Hanuman.
On the menu was aam panna, sharbat, cupcakes and ice candy. However, puri-sabzi and chola-chawal continued to be the most popular combos. Major intersections saw long lines of devotees and passersby queuing up at pandals to get the prasad. The tradition of the Bada Mangal Bhandara is unique to Lucknow and it dates back to the Nawabi era and symbolises communal harmony.
"On Tuesdays, people are rushing to offices and schools. Holding a Bhandara on Saturday allows families to come together, sit, and eat peacefully. It also ensures that food does not get wasted," said Rajesh Shukla, an organiser at a Bhandara near Bhoothnath Market.
Another organiser who had organised a Bhandara at Aminabad Park said that he organised the bhandara on Saturday as it was Shani Jayanti and Amavasya. "It's Saturday, the day of Lord Hanuman like Tuesday. With the month of Jyeshtha, many people host bhandaras on Tuesdays so we thought of organising it on Saturday," said founder Shiv Shakti Seva Parivar Trust Pradeep Singh Hada....
