As rain lashes state, 75 roads shut; IMD issues orange alert
Mussoorie, July 15 -- Rains continued to lash Uttarakhand on Monday, causing disruption in various areas with 75 roads closed across the state due to landslides and falling boulders.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Tuesday, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and intense spells in parts of Dehradun and Bageshwar districts.
According to the Dehradun centre of IMD, isolated locations in Rudraprayag, Uttarkashi, and Nainital are also likely to witness heavy rain and lightning activity. Authorities have urged residents and tourists to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel and stay indoors during thunderstorms, especially in landslide-prone areas..
On Monday, Jan ki Chatti in Uttarkashi received 15.5 mm of rainfall by 3 pm, while Kalsi recorded 14 mm. Between 8.30 am and 9 am, Kalsi recorded 11.5 mm, followed by Koti with 7 mm and Roorkee (Amfu) with 5.5 mm. The state recorded an average of 8.9 mm rainfall in 24 hours ending at 8.30 am Monday - 33% below the normal of 13.3 mm for this period. However, Bageshwar recorded 21.3 mm of rain - 139% above normal. Nainital received 20.5 mm (22% above normal), and Chamoli saw 14.7 mm (61% above normal), indicating localised but intense monsoon activity.
District disaster management officials confirmed that clearance work was underway in all affected regions.
Landslides and debris blocked 75 roads across Uttarakhand by 10 am Monday. Pauri district was the worst affected, with 15 rural roads closed. "Several roads were blocked overnight due to debris and boulders caused by rainfall. With the help of heavy machinery and additional workforce, many routes were reopened by noon," said Sachin, a junior engineer from PWD PMGSY division.
Thunderstorm activity, accompanied by lightning, was reported in various places including Dehradun, Jolly Grant, Mussoorie and Pantnagar. Gusty winds exceeding 30 kmph were recorded - Jolly Grant (41 kmph), Chamoli (35 kmph), and Pantnagar (31 kmph)....
