Around 20 overhead tanks surveyed in city in first two days
LUCKNOW, April 20 -- The Jalkal department has accelerated its drone survey of overhead water tanks across the city, inspecting around 20 tanks in zone 8 of the Lucknow Municipal Corporation, including localities like Ashiana, LDA Colony, Transport Nagar and others, in the first two days as authorities push to address contamination risks flagged earlier. Officials said the survey will play a crucial role in identifying structurally unsafe tanks supplying water to thousands of households.
Zone 8 is one of the eight administrative divisions in the city, managed by the Nagar Nigam Lucknow to provide civic services and sanitation.
Jalkal department general manager Kuldeep Singh said the department launched the survey on April 17. "We aim to complete this zone by April 19 and finish the entire survey within a week," he added.
Officials are using drones to capture detailed visuals of tank structures, focusing on cracks, leakages, broken roofs, and poor maintenance conditions. The department will compile findings into a report and submit it to divisional commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant.
The survey follows directives issued on April 9 after reports revealed that damaged overhead tanks were supplying potentially contaminated water to residents. Pant had ordered a comprehensive inspection of around 140 tanks and directed officials to ensure immediate repair and cleaning of faulty units.
The move gained urgency after a severely damaged tank in Rajajipuram Sector 'E', which was highlighted in the HT report in April 2026, was found supplying water to nearly 3,000-4,000 households despite having a broken roof for years.
Officials said the ongoing survey will help prioritise repairs and prevent further health risks. The final report is expected to guide immediate interventions, including structural repairs, cleaning drives, and possible replacement of critically damaged tanks....
