Meerut, Oct. 8 -- A 34-year-old Army havaldar was found dead inside the bathroom of a hotel in Meerut's Begumpul area on Tuesday evening, with police suspecting cardiac arrest as the likely cause of death. The deceased was a native of Ambala and posted with the Bengal Engineer Group in Roorkee, police said on Wednesday. Circle officer (Cantonment) Sanjay Gupta said police were informed around 5pm on Tuesday that an Army personnel had died inside the bathroom of a hotel in the Sadar Bazar area. Police and military police personnel reached the spot and began an investigation. According to police, the army personnel had been unwell for some time and was undergoing treatment at the military hospital in Meerut Cantonment. He was discharged from the hospital on Tuesday afternoon and was travelling towards Roorkee along with Naik Saurabh Singh and Yashveer Singh. The three stopped at the hotel to rest before proceeding to Begumpul, from where they were scheduled to board a bus to Roorkee, police said. After reaching the hotel, the army personnel went into the bathroom but did not return for a considerable period. Saurabh and Yashveer knocked on the bathroom door but received no response. They then sought assistance from the hotel staff. The bathroom door was subsequently broken open, following which the man was found lying on the floor, police said. A forensic team examined the spot and collected evidence as part of the investigation. The body was later sent for postmortem examination. Police said cardiac arrest was suspected to have caused the death, particularly in view of his recent illness and treatment. However, the exact cause of death will be established only after the postmortem report is received, officials said.
