LUCKNOW, Feb. 8 -- The transport department's ongoing crackdown on overloaded vehicles in Lucknow has resulted in the seizure of 35 vehicles and the issuance of 65 challans since the launch of the special drive on February 1, officials said. The enforcement campaign, being conducted across Uttar Pradesh till February 15 on government directions, aims to curb overloading by both heavy and light commercial vehicles. In Lucknow, transport department teams, working in coordination with mining officials, have intensified checks at key locations across the city. ARTO (Enforcement) Alok Yadav said the seized vehicles include trucks and tractor-trolleys found carrying loads beyond permissible limits. "From the commencement of the drive till date, 35 overloaded vehicles have been seized. In addition, 65 challans have been issued to violators," he said. The officer added that despite seizing a truck during the checking drive, he faced pressure from a group of people. Enforcement was stepped up on Friday, when transport department teams seized 16 overloaded vehicles in a single day. The seized vehicles have been parked at police stations in Madiaon, Saidpur and Sarojini Nagar, as well as at the RTO office premises in Transport Nagar. During the drive, officials also arrested a suspect accused of alerting overloaded vehicle operators about the movement and location of checking teams.
