All about cyclosporiasis, the 'explosive diarrhoea' surge in the US
India, July 16 -- Since May, at least 7,000 people across 34 states in the US have been reported to have contracted cyclosporiasis, a gastrointestinal illness, dubbed 'explosive diarrhoea' on social media. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is tracing produce items, including lettuce.
The infection spreads mainly through food or water contaminated with the Cyclospora parasite and is not commonly passed directly between people.
Does this mean travellers should be worried? "There is no need to panic," says Dr Aishwarya R, infectious diseases specialist, Aster Whitefield Hospitals, Bengaluru.
However, travellers who develop severe, persistent or recurring diarrhoea after returning should consult a doctor, as routine stool tests may miss the parasite. Dr Souradeep Chowdhury of Medanta Noida advises washing fruits, herbs and leafy vegetables under clean running water....
