VARANASI, June 16 -- The Anjuman Intezamia Masajid Committee (AIMC) on Monday said it would fight a legal battle to protect the Ganj Shaheeda Mosque near Kashi Railway Station after the railway administration asked the management to remove the structure by June 20. SM Yasin, AIMC joint secretary, said the committee, which manages the mosque, rejected the railway's claim that the mosque was allegedly built illegally on railway land. According to a notice pasted on the mosque, the structure near the first entrance of Kashi Railway Station is obstructing redevelopment work. The notice stated that a court case, Anjuman Intezamia vs Union of India, was dismissed on August 28, 2024. "The Railway Administration has decided to remove the mosque, which was illegally built on railway land. Therefore, you are requested to remove it by June 20, 2026, otherwise the Railway Administration will initiate demolition and removal proceedings any day after that date," added the notice. Meanwhile, AIMC termed the notice misleading, claiming it carries neither the signature of any railway officer nor the date of issue. The committee said the case mentioned in the notice relates to land outside the mosque and has no connection with the structure itself. Yasin claimed the mosque dates back to 1034 and is recorded in settlement maps of 1883-84 and earlier records. "AIMC will fight the legal battle at every level for saving the mosque," he said. Kashi Railway Station is currently undergoing redevelopment, with plans for new passenger facilities, three-storey buildings at both entrances, and a 200-metre-long concourse linking them.htc...
