AI171 wreckage being shifted to AAI site for probe into crash
Ahmedabad, June 23 -- Nearly ten days after Air India's Dreamliner Flight AI171 crashed into a medical college hostel near Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad shortly after takeoff, portions of the aircraft's wreckage are being relocated to a site near the airport where investigators will reconstruct the debris for analysis, a senior police official said.
"The pieces are being moved from the crash site. Some were relocated on Saturday, and the work continues today. Every piece of wreckage is being transported from the crash site to a new location for reconstruction," GS Malik, Ahmedabad Police Commissioner told HT.
HT had reported on June 20 that the debris are being moved to a site near the Gujarat State Aviation Infrastructure Company Limited (GUJSAIL) office near the airport, on land owned by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), which has been identified for use in the ongoing investigation.
Commissioner Malik said that they have recovered 104 mobile phone devices from the wreckage that have been sent to FSL for investigation. The videos and photographs retrieved from the phones could provide some vital information about what went wrong with the plane before the crash....
