NAGPUR, Sept. 12 -- Nine people, including three children, were killed when a speeding truck collided with a vehicle early Friday morning on the Kolkata-Mumbai National Highway near Maharashtra's Bhandara, roughly 125 km from Nagpur, police said. According to preliminary reports, the incident took place when Bolero multi-utility vehicle (MUV) was exiting a petrol pump. A speeding truck rammed into it from behind, completely damaging the vehicle, police said. Eight passengers in the MUV died on the spot, and 13 bystanders sustained injuries, five of them critically. One injured woman later succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment at the hospital, taking the death toll to nine. All victims, including young children, were female labourers from Chhattisgarh who were travelling to Nagpur, police said. The injured were rushed to the Bhandara Government Medical College for treatment.
