PRAYAGRAJ, April 26 -- An 88-year-old woman was allegedly murdered for her jewellery while she slept alone with her door open in Pratapgarh, police said on Saturday. The victim, identified as Phuljhariya, was a resident of Amani Bhola Ka Purwa village under the Hathigawan police station area. The incident occurred on the night of April 19 and came to light after her jewellery was found missing, suggesting robbery as the motive behind the murder, they added. Following a complaint lodged by the victim's son, police registered a case against unidentified person and initiated an investigation. Acting on leads, a police team led by station house officer (SHO) inspector Satyendra Singh arrested Rajendra Prajapati, alias Chithru, near the Barna underpass in Badupur on Saturday. During interrogation, the accused allegedly confessed that he had targeted the elderly woman to steal jewellery to fund his alcohol addiction. Police said that on the night of April 19, he returned from Lal Gopalganj under the influence of alcohol and, wanting more liquor but lacking money, entered the woman's house with the intent to commit theft.
