Silchar, July 10 -- An 18-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly abducting, raping and killing an eight-year-old girl in Assam's Sribhumi district, police said on Thursday. According to police, the incident took place around 10 am on Wednesday when the accused, who was known to the girl, allegedly lured her to a forested area near her home. Both the accused and the victim belong to the same neighbourhood. Police said the accused is claiming to be below 18 years of age, and his claim is being examined using available documents. Police said the girl went missing after stepping out to play near her home around 8 am. When she did not return till 11.30 am, her family members began searching for her in nearby areas. They found her body on a forested hillock near their residence later in the evening around 4 pm, police said. Additional superintendent of police (crime) Trinayan Bhuyan said the accused went around looking for the girl after she went missing, pretending he knew nothing about the incident. "He was seen pillion riding with the victim's father when the family was searching for her," Bhuyan said. "We have arrested the accused and started our interrogation. He said that he did not rape the girl but confessed to killing her. He said the girl's father allegedly tortured him, and to avenge, he did it. The body has been sent for a postmortem examination, and once we get the report, things will be clearer," Bhuyan said. Police said a case has been registered under provisions related to abduction, rape of a girl under 12 years of age and murder under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Section 6 (aggravated penetrative sexual assault) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012. Another senior police officer, requesting anonymity, said the accused is claiming to be below 18 years of age. "His claim is being examined with the available documents. Once we ascertain his age, we'll produce him before the court," he said....
