60-year-old man visiting Varanasi for family function shot dead
VARANASI, June 16 -- A 60-year-old man from Mirzapur was shot dead early Monday morning while sleeping outside a house in the Benia Bagh locality, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Chowk police station.
According to the police, the victim, identified as Rajan, had travelled from Narayanpur in Mirzapur to attend the engagement ceremony of his second wife's younger son, which was scheduled for June 20.
The deceased's son said, "My father came here for an engagement. He arrived four days ago, and three days ago, two people on a Bullet motorcycle tried to attack him at night. My father woke up and saw a pistol in the assailant's hand. He raised an alarm, and when we came out, the two criminals fled."
On the night of the incident, the victim was sleeping alone on a cot outside the house while other family members slept indoors.
Upon waking the next morning, the family discovered him in a pool of blood with multiple gunshot wounds, three to the head and two to the stomach.
Assistant commissioner of police (ACP) Atul Anjan Tripathi, accompanied by a heavy police force, arrived at the scene, followed by deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Kashi, Gaurav Banswal, and additional DCP of Kashi, Vaibhav Bangar.
The authorities collected forensic evidence and have sent the body for a post-mortem examination.
