AGRA, July 20 -- Five people were arrested for allegedly smuggling illegal liquor in an ambulance escorted by another car. Police recovered liquor worth around Rs.10 lakh. According to police, the gang changed the ambulance's number plates while crossing state borders to evade detection. Addressing the media at police lines on Sunday, the deputy commissioner of police (DCP) (Agra West), Aditya, said that the Etmadpur police arrested five alleged liquor smugglers. The accused have been identified as Rohit, Sahil and Pankaj, all from Sonipat, and Sahil and Sandeep, both from Jind district in Haryana. "The vehicle was originally registered as an ambulance in Punjab. The accused used to change its number plates while crossing state borders, and another car escorted it to monitor police checking on the route," said DCP West. "One of the accused has a criminal history, with cases registered against him under the Excise Act in 2019. The criminal antecedents of the other accused are being verified," said Aditya.
