41-yr-old woman alleges family blocked her marriage, mother denies charges
PRAYAGRAJ, May 3 -- A 41-year-old woman from a village under the Sarai Inayat police station area in Prayagraj's trans-Ganga region has alleged that her own family is preventing her from getting married.
She said that neighbours often keep asking her, "When are you getting married?" But when she raises the issue with her family, she is met with resistance, hostility, and, she alleges, even violence.
On March 29, she filed a written complaint against her parents, brother, sister-in-law, and sister, alleging abuse, verbal harassment, physical assault, and long-term mental and financial neglect.
She said tensions escalated on April 27 when, after she again brought up the issue of marriage, the entire family allegedly mistreated her. She has appealed to the police to register a case against her family and ensure her protection so she can live with dignity and without fear.
In her complaint, she said, "Despite being 41, my family has not arranged my marriage even though I want to get married." She further alleged that she has received no financial support from them for the past two decades and has been supporting herself by teaching children and working at shops and beauty parlours.
She further alleged that whenever her family finds out where she is working, they interfere and get her removed from her job, making her livelihood another point of conflict.
A video related to the dispute has also surfaced on social media, though its authenticity has not been independently verified by HT.
The mother, however, said the daughter initially chose to focus on her education instead of marriage and, with family support, even completed a Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed.).
She further claimed that "influential relatives" have instigated the daughter in a property dispute, encouraging her to file a civil case seeking a share in her father's land. The family said the allegations of delayed marriage and abuse are baseless and linked to the ongoing land dispute.
Sarai Inayat police station SHO Sanjay Prasad Gupta confirmed that no FIR has been registered so far.
He said both parties were heard and sent back after preliminary counselling. He also noted that the matter appears linked to a property dispute while investigations are still underway....
