LUCKNOW, July 25 -- A CBI court in Ghaziabad on Friday sentenced a former branch manager of Sarva UP Gramin Bank in Meerut district to four years of rigorous imprisonment in a decade-old bribery case, senior CBI officials said. The court also imposed a fine of Rs.10,000 on the convict, Umesh Kumar Singhal, who was serving as the branch manager of the bank's Machhra branch at the time of the offence. According to the CBI, the case was registered on April 28, 2016, after a complaint alleging that Singhal demanded a bribe of Rs.28,000 for sanctioning and disbursing a loan of Rs.2.5 lakh. During negotiations, the accused allegedly reduced the demand to Rs.25,000. The CBI caught Singhal red-handed. Following the investigation, the agency filed a charge sheet on June 24, 2016.
