Karnal, March 8 -- Four women workers were killed and nearly a dozen others were injured in a fire at a factory in Safidon sub-division of Haryana's Jind district on Saturday, officials said. Those dead have been identified as Pooja (27), Usha (45), Pinki (45) and Guddi (52), residents of nearby areas in Bhaat Colony, where the factory was located. Officials said the fire, suspected to have been caused by a short circuit, broke out near entry gate of the unit. The gate was reportedly closed from outside, hampering rescue efforts, police said. The unit, used for packaging 'gulal' (powdered colour) and other materials used during Holi, was operating illegally, said police. Around 30 workers were present when the fire broke out. SP Kuldeep Singh said the deaths appear to have been caused by suffocation, though final report is awaited. "We have registered an FIR against four persons running factory," he added. htc...
