4 more held in Pauri Garhwal suicide case
Dehradun, Aug. 26 -- Four additional arrests were made on Monday in connection with the ongoing case around a 32-year-old man's death by suicide in Pauri Garhwal, police said.
The accused were identified as Shubham Khanduri, Gaurav Kamboj, Vikas Shah and Abhishek Gairola, all from Dehradun, they added.
Pauri Garhwal senior superintendent of police Lokeshwar Singh said that a thorough investigation was underway, and added that he was personally monitoring the case. "Our police team is conducting a thorough investigation and collecting necessary evidence in the matter. Apart from the main accused arrested earlier, we have arrested four more accused in the case," he said, clarifying that the four new arrests were made in connection with the first FIR registered in the case. The main accused, Himashu Chamoli, state secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), was arrested on Thursday.
A case was registered against Chamoli and four others under Section 108 (abetment of suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Pauri Garhwal police station on Thursday. A few hours later, police registered another FIR under the Arms Act against two people over the "illegal use" of a licensed gun with which the victim shot himself.
Congress president Karan Mahara, while addressing a press conference on Saturday, questioned the registration of the second FIR by suggesting an attempt by the police to weaken the case. The police, however, refuted the Congress' allegations.
"It is completely baseless and false. The first FIR was registered under Section 108 of the BNS, which pertains to abetment of suicide. The second was under relevant sections of the Arms Act. Whenever a heinous crime involves the use of arms or weapons, a separate case is mandatorily registered under the Arms Act to trace the source of the weapon and establish where it came from. This is a routine legal procedure. Filing a case under the Arms Act neither weakens the first FIR nor is intended to protect the accused," the SSP said.
The body of the 32-year-old man was found on Thursday inside his car, parked at a secluded spot. According to the police, the deceased purportedly uploaded a video on social media a few hours prior to his death, in which he alleged harassment from the BJYM leader and his associates, in connection with a Rs.35 lakh monetary dispute over property....
