LAKHIMPUR KHERI, Sept. 4 -- As many as 37 families living in the low-lying area between the Mohana river and the right afflux bund of the Girija barrage in Jasnagar village, along the India-Nepal border in Nighasan tehsil, were shifted to Jasnagar Basic School on Thursday as a precautionary measure. Meanwhile, the flood situation caused by the Sharda in several areas of Palia and Nighasan tehsils remained serious on Thursday, with several villages and roads along the river still inundated. Although the water level began receding on Wednesday night, it remained 26 cm above the danger mark of 153.49 metres at the Palia Sharda bridge, flood control room officials said. The Sharda had risen 35 cm above the danger mark at Palia on Wednesday. The Mohana, joined by Nepal's Karnali river in the Tikunia border area, has been causing erosion at Jasnagar village for the past fortnight, threatening the right afflux bund and houses located between the river and the embankment.
