32 convicts in 1990 Agra caste violence granted bail
PRAYAGRAJ, Sept. 4 -- The Allahabad high court has granted bail to 32 convicts in a 35-year-old caste violence case from Agra.
The conflict had erupted in 1990 under Kagaraul police station limits when members of the Jat community allegedly attacked Dalits. The trial court in Agra convicted the accused and sentenced them on May 28, 2025, following which they were taken into custody.
Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav, while hearing a criminal appeal filed by Jaidev and 31 others, passed the bail order on August 28.
The court noted that the appellants had been on bail throughout the trial and had not misused the liberty. Most of them are over 65 years of age and suffering from various ailments, while one, Devi Singh, aged about 95, had already been released on short-term bail earlier.
The defence argued that the trial court had misread evidence and overlooked contradictions in the statements of 27 prosecution witnesses. The prosecution, it was contended, failed to prove the case beyond reasonable doubt.
Observing that the final hearing of the appeal may take time, the high court directed that the appellants be released on bail without commenting on the merits of the case....
