IMPHAL, Sept. 1 -- Three people were killed and one sustained injuries in a fresh attack by unknown armed miscreants at Teikhang Kuki village in Kangpokpi district of Manipur on Monday, while three houses were reportedly set ablaze, police said. According to police, the incident took place at around 7.40 am and the deceased have been identified as Hoikhoneng, 20, Nemneichong Lhujem, 52, (both women) and Lamtinthang, 35, while father of Lamtinthang identified as Seilun sustained injuries. However the details and number of the injured is yet to be ascertained. Local residents alleged that the attack was carried out by armed Naga militants groups however, the allegation could not be verified independently. Police said heavy gunfire and explosives were heard from the area and an investigation has been launched to ascertain the identity of the miscreants. The incident occurred following an attack on Thursday where four civilians belonging to the Naga community were killed during an alleged ambush carried out by armed miscreants along the same road. Imphal-Tamei road (Imphal-Tamenglong road) around 120 km long roadway connects Imphal and Kangpokpi to Tamei and Tamenglong). Kangpokpi is a Kuki-Zo dominated district while Tamenglong is a Naga dominated district of Manipur. Since May 13 twin ambush carried out by unknown armed miscreants at two different locations one at Noney district and other at Kangpokpi district killing four including three church leaders and one Naga man, tension escalated between Naga and Kuki community. On the same day, 48 civilians belonging to Naga and Kuki-Zo were held captivated by both the groups in retaliatory tension. Later, nearly after a month of captivity all the hostages were set free however, 6 Naga men were found dead near Kharam Vaiphei (Kuki village) in Kangpokpi district. The case has been under investigation by the National Investigating Agency (NIA) and as a part of the investigation four individuals including a couple have been arrested in the month of July on two separate occasions.
