MEERUT, Aug. 9 -- Three Kanwariyas were killed and at least 12 others injured in a series of road accidents reported at different points along the highway Kanwar route in Meerut's Daurala area as thousands of Shiva devotees returned from Haridwar carrying Kanwars, said police. The accidents, involving motorcycles, pedestrians and unidentified vehicles, occurred at several locations along the busy pilgrimage route between late Friday night and Saturday morning. Police rushed the injured to Daurala community health centre (CHC) and Future Plus Modi Puram Hospital, while the bodies of the deceased were sent to the mortuary for post-mortem examination. One of the fatal accidents occurred during wee hours on Saturday in front of Shiva Dhaba near Walidpur village. According to police, 21-year-old Sahil, son of Shiv Kumar and a resident of Faridabad, Haryana, was riding a motorcycle with a Kanwar when an unidentified vehicle struck him. He sustained serious injuries and died while undergoing treatment at Daurala CHC. Police sent his body to the mortuary and used his mobile phone to contact his cousin Sandeep and inform the family. In another accident near Shiva Dhaba, 22-year-old Raj, son of Keshav and a resident of the Murga Market area of Delhi, died after his motorcycle was hit. An unidentified Kanwariya was also killed in the same accident, while another Kanwariya suffered serious injuries. Police recovered a motorcycle from the spot and shifted the injured person to the district hospital. Efforts were underway to establish the identities of the unidentified deceased and injured Kanwariyas. Daurala inspector SK Singh said two of the deceased Kanwariyas had been identified, while police were working to establish the identities of one deceased person and one injured Kanwariya. The families of the identified deceased had been informed, he said. Police said efforts were underway to identify the remaining victims and determine the circumstances of the separate accidents. Other accidents were also reported along the route. Near Mataur village, Ashish Bana, son of Satpal and a resident of Girdharpur in Hapur, was injured after being hit by an unidentified vehicle while returning from Haridwar with a Kanwar. Police admitted him to Daurala CHC. Near Dadri village, Paramjit, son of Satvir and a resident of Sainik Vihar in Delhi, was injured after an unidentified car sideswiped him while he was crossing the road. Paramjit was returning from Haridwar carrying a Kanwar and had stopped at Dadri to swing his Kanwar before crossing the road for some work. He was subsequently taken to Daurala CHC. In front of Kanauda village, an unidentified vehicle hit Kishan, son of Gaurishankar and a resident of Karol Bagh, Delhi, while he was returning from Haridwar with a Kanwar. Police admitted him to Daurala CHC. Near the A-to-Z cut on the highway Kanwar route, two brothers from Salarpur in Delhi, Abhishek and Munnu, sons of Rambhajan, were hit by an unidentified vehicle. Both were taken to Daurala CHC, where doctors referred Munnu to the district hospital for further treatment. Another accident occurred in front of Pandit Dhaba in Daurala, where Vijay, a Kanwariya from Vijay Nagar in Ghaziabad, was hit by an unidentified vehicle. He sustained injuries and was admitted to Daurala CHC. Near Kanauda village, Sanjay, son of Hari Chaudhary and a resident of Gaya in Bihar, was also hit by an unidentified vehicle while returning from Haridwar with a Kanwar. Police took him to Daurala CHC for treatment. Near the Sivaya toll plaza, in front of Bhagwati College, two Kanwariyas travelling on foot-Amit, son of Vinod, and Ajay, son of Shyamlal, both residents of Shalimar Bagh in Delhi-were hit by an unidentified vehicle. Both injured devotees were admitted to Daurala CHC. At another point in Daurala, in front of the Jio petrol pump, an unidentified vehicle hit Manoj, son of Lalsingh and a resident of Uttam Nagar, Delhi. He was subsequently admitted to Daurala CHC....
