IMPHAL, Sept. 1 -- Three people were killed and one other was injured in a fresh attack by unknown armed miscreants at Teikhang Kuki village in Kangpokpi district of Manipur on Monday, while three houses were reportedly set ablaze, police said. According to police, the incident took place at around 7.40 am and the deceased have been identified as Hoikhoneng, 20, Nemneichong Lhujem, 52, (both women) and Lamtinthang, 35 and, while Lamtinthang's father identified as Seilun sustained injuries. However the details and number of the injured are yet to be ascertained. Local residents alleged that the attack was carried out by armed Naga militants groups however, however, the allegation could not be verified independently. Police said heavy gunfire and explosives were heard from the area and an investigation has been launched to ascertain the identity of the miscreants. Meanwhile, Kuki CSO Coordinating Committee, Kangpokpi claimed the attack was an "unprovoked and barbaric attack" allegedly carried out by armed cadres of the NSCN (IM) and its proxy ZUF (K). Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), a Kuki-Zo apex body, has announced a 24-hour total shutdown along the National Highway-2 (Imphal-Dimapur) with effect from 5 am of September 1 to condemn the Monday attack, said a statement issued by the committee.
