3 cyber fraudsters held in Varanasi for duping people of Rs 50 lakh
VARANASI, Feb. 25 -- Three criminals involved in cyber frauds were arrested in Sarnath by Varanasi police on Tuesday.
A total of 10 mobile phones and 9 SIM cards were recovered from their possession, and it was found that they were using various suspicious apps, said police.
The accused were identified as Anish Verma, a resident of Ballia district, Purushottam Kumar and Tuktuk Kumar Pandit, both residents of Deoghar district (Jharkhand), said deputy commissioner of police,crime, Akash Patel.
A case was registered at the Cyber Crime Police Station against the accused under sections 111, 318, 318(4), 319, 336, 338, and 340 of the BNS and sections 660, 43, and 66 of the IT Act, in connection with the fraudulent credit card app creation and defrauding people through social media advertisements by posing as fake bank representatives. The investigation was assigned to inspector Uday Veer Singh.
The preliminary investigations revealed that they were involved in the cyber fraud of approximately Rs.50 lakh, said the police officer.
Assistant commissioner of police, Sarnath, Vidush Saxena said the accused were involved in creating fake IDs and advertising for credit card creation/limit enhancement.
The criminals used to obtain mobile numbers, PAN cards, and bank details from interested individuals by posing as representatives of the banks. Later they sent a forged APK file that looked identical to a bank's credit card and then asked the people to install it. Then they asked the victim's current credit card details through video calls.
After APK installation, the victim's OTP and SMS data were received on the app.Using the OTP, the victim's credit card was used by them for online transactions/wallet transfers/virtual card generation and money withdrawals, said officials.
Assistant commissioner of police, Sarnath said that the preliminary investigations estimate the cyber fraud to be approximately Rs.50 lakh....
