Lucknow, Aug. 18 -- Police have booked 27 people, including 12 named accused, and arrested two women on Monday, a day after a police sub-inspector was assaulted and an attempt was made to strangle him. The incident took place under the Para police station, when a joint police and municipal team faced violent resistance during an anti-encroachment drive in the Budheshwar area of Lucknow on Sunday. A team of the Lucknow Municipal Corporation, accompanied by police personnel, reached the locality to take action against alleged illegal cattle rearing and the dumping of animal dung and waste on public roads and drains. According to the FIR lodged by sub-inspector Vinay Patel, a mob comprising around 20-25 men and two women allegedly gathered at the spot and began abusing and threatening the police and municipal personnel. The group obstructed the government team from carrying out the enforcement action and attacked members of the municipal staff. The situation escalated when police intervened to control the mob. One of the attackers allegedly grabbed SI Vinay Patel from behind and tried to strangle him. The FIR further states that a woman carrying a heavy iron chain allegedly struck the police officer on the head. When other policemen rushed to rescue the sub-inspector, the remaining members of the group allegedly attacked them with sticks, iron rods and other weapons. Police personnel eventually managed to overpower and apprehend two women allegedly involved in the attack. They were identified as Khushbun, 20, daughter of Abbas, and Afreen, 27, daughter of Abbas, both residents of Gadiyana-Badalkheda. Police said a heavy iron chain allegedly used during the assault was recovered from Khushbun and seized as evidence.
