23 arrested over stone-throwing at Ambedkar Jayanti procession
Kasganj, April 16 -- Twenty-three people, including five women, were arrested in connection with stone-pelting at an Ambedkar Jayanti procession that left a policeman injured, an official said on Wednesday.
The incident occurred on Tuesday in Chahka Gunar village under Sahawar Police Station limits when a procession celebrating Dr B. R. Ambedkar's birth anniversary was passing through the area.
District magistrate Pranay Singh said an FIR has been lodged against 38 people, of whom 23 have been arrested.
According to the police, some individuals allegedly pelted stones at the procession, leading to chaos and tensions between groups. A constable was hit by a stone. Some people blocked the road using tractor-trolleys.
Superintendent of police OP Singh said around 50 processions were carried out across the district on Tuesday under police security.
Singh said the incident appeared to be a deliberate attempt to disrupt peace.
"Political motivations behind this will become clear after the investigation," he stated.
Heavy police deployment has been made in the village, and the situation is now peaceful, the officer said.
A four-year-old boy was burnt alive after fire broke out in a thatched hut in a village in Sambhal on Wednesday, officials said.
The incident occurred in Nandrauli village under Gunnaur police station limits when the child's parents were harvesting wheat in a nearby field.
According to Tehsildar (Gunnaur) Ravindra Gautam, the boy, Pravesh, was sleeping inside the hut when the thatched roof caught fire. The child was trapped inside and burnt to death before help could reach him.
"The body has been sent for post-mortem. The administration will provide all possible financial assistance to the aggrieved family as per government norms," Gautam said.
Station House Officer (Gunnaur) Rajiv Kumar Malik said a police team rushed to the village after receiving information.
"We are waiting for a formal complaint from the family. Further legal action will be taken based on their statement and the investigation," he said.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deepest condolences to the bereaved family.
In a statement released via social media, the Chief Minister's Office said Adityanath has directed senior district officials to reach the scene immediately and expedite relief work.
He also instructed authorities to ensure that the necessary ex-gratia assistance is provided to the family without delay....
