KANPUR, May 13 -- A surprise inspection at UHM Hospital here on Tuesday caught 22 doctors, 10 staff members shirking duty, exposing attendance record irregularities, triggering salary cuts. Authorities also detained two suspected middlemen allegedly operating within the premises. District magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh, accompanied by ADM (City) Rajesh Kumar with a police team, arrived unannounced at 9.30 am to enforce discipline in the public health system. The inspection revealed 32 employees absent from their posts during working hours. The administration ordered a one-day salary deduction for all absentees. Hospital director Dr B Paul faced scrutiny after arriving nearly 30 minutes after the inspection began. Surgeon Dr Prashant Mishra was recorded present in the register but absent from his chamber during the visit. The district magistrate ordered a detailed inquiry into possible manipulation of attendance entries. Two individuals were detained from the premises. Vivek Tiwari of Narwal's Maholi village and Haider Ali of Chamanganj are being questioned about their alleged links with hospital staff regarding whether patients were directed towards private facilities.
