2 pilgrims die on Yamunotri trek route
Mussoorie, April 21 -- Two elderly pilgrims died in separate incidents on the trek route to Yamunotri Temple on Sunday, the opening day of the Char Dham Yatra, officials said. According to the District Emergency Operation Centre, both incidents occurred while the pilgrims were on their way to Yamunotri Dham.
District disaster management officer of Uttarkashi, Shardul Gusain, said the victims were identified as Uday Tambey (67), a resident of Nashik in Maharashtra, and Pratima Mishra, a resident of Indore in Madhya Pradesh.
Tambey fell ill near Kharsali around 3.30 pm on Sunday while travelling from Kharsali to Yamunotri Dham for darshan and died shortly thereafter.
In the second incident, Mishra was travelling from Janki Chatti towards the temple when she reportedly suffered a dizzy spell and fell from a horse about 500 metres before reaching the shrine around 11 am on Sunday.
"She was rushed to a government hospital after the fall but was declared brought dead," said Gusain. Chief medical officer of Uttarkashi, Dr BS Rawat, said health screening of elderly pilgrims is conducted at Hina for the Gangotri Temple route and at Dobata for the Yamunotri route. "If any medical issue is detected, pilgrims are advised to take utmost precaution. If their condition is not suitable for the trek, they are advised not to undertake the journey," said Dr Rawat.
He added that adequate screening facilities and several medical units have been deployed along the pilgrimage route to handle emergencies.
"One ICU unit at Barkot, equipped with specialist doctors, has also been kept ready to deal with any serious medical cases during the yatra," Rawat said....
