2 municipal workers die after entering sewer tank in Indore
Bhopal, March 3 -- Two sanitation workers of the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) died after entering a sewer tank in Indore on Monday evening, allegedly due to suffocation caused by toxic gas.The incident took place near Choithram Mandi Gate.
Those dead have been identified as Karan and Ajay.
According to doctors, the preliminary cause of death appears to be suffocation due to toxic gas emissions inside the chamber. The exact cause will be confirmed after the post-mortem examination scheduled for Tuesday, the officials said.
Initially, fellow sanitation workers claimed the two had entered the tank to clean it. However, the civic body later clarified that they had gone down to retrieve a pipe that had accidentally fallen into the chamber while emptying a dewatering vehicle not to clean the tank.
Indore Municipal Commissioner Kshitij Singhal said, "While emptying water from safety tank vehicle number CPO 8001 into the primary line chamber, a pipe slipped and fell inside. One of the employees, Karan, descended into the chamber without informing anyone to retrieve the pipe and fell inside. In an attempt to save him, Ajay also went down, but both were overcome by toxic fumes and died."
Another sanitation worker, Akabar Khan, and a local resident also entered the tank in a bid to rescue them but were safely pulled out.
Deputy commissioner of police Krishna Lal Chandani said personnel from Rajendra Nagar police station pulled Karan and Ajay out of the chamber and rushed them to a hospital, where doctors declared them dead....
