Dehradun, April 5 -- Two people were arrested on Saturday in connection with the killing of retired brigadier Mukesh Kumar Joshi , police officers aware of the matter said. The men were taken into custody after a short exchange of fire with police in Rajpur , said a senior officer. The accused were identified as Shantanu Tyagi (21), a Saharanpur resident, and Kavish Hussain Tyagi (22), a Dehradun resident from Muzzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh, who was shot in the foot during the gunfight, he added. Brigadier Joshi, who served in the Corps of Military Intelligence, was on his morning walk near Johri village on Monday when he was shot by a stray bullet allegedly fired as part of a chase between two SUVs, spurred by a brawl at a club on Mussoorie Road. His last rites were conducted on Wednesday. "A tip-off was received that two suspects involved in the case had returned to Dehradun. During a checking drive in the Rajpur area, a police team spotted two men near Guniyal village who subsequently attempted to flee. One of the suspects was arrested on the spot, while the other opened fire at the police team. Police retaliated in self-defence, injuring the accused in the leg. He was later taken to the hospital for treatment," said Dehradun superintendent of police Premendra Dobhal, adding that a pistol, along with two spent cartridges and three live rounds, was recovered. A first information report (FIR) was registered against them for attempt to murder and illegal possession of arms, police said. The total tally of arrests in the case now stands at 9 people. Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Wednesday had said strict action would be taken against those involved. "Those who attempt to disrupt law and order will not be spared under any circumstances," he said. He added that officials have been directed to launch "Operation Prahar" across the state against undesirable and hooligan elements.
