LUCKNOW, Sept. 13 -- The Uttar Pradesh government has suspended an executive engineer and ordered a probe against a superintending engineer after an inspection found defects in a four-lane greenfield highway project on NH-731A, the Ram Van Gaman Marg, in Prayagraj. The inspection of Package-2, covering the 35-km to 49.155-km stretch from Autarpur to Sangraur Uparhar, found distress in the approach and gap slabs of a flyover, cracks and gaps in the pavement over about 1.50 km, distress in the adjoining reinforced earth wall at some locations, and erosion of the embankment slope with damage to protective works over about 500 metres. The PWD order said the concessionaire was responsible for maintenance for 15 years after the project's completion. It found that the executive engineer, National Highway Division, PWD, Prayagraj, failed to properly discharge his supervisory duties and exercise due diligence during execution. The government ordered his immediate suspension and attached him to the office of the chief engineer (development) and head of department, UP PWD, Lucknow. The order also stated that the superintending engineer, NH Circle, PWD, Prayagraj, failed to properly discharge his supervisory responsibilities and exercise due diligence.
