Mussoorie, July 21 -- Two people died in separate incidents and an eight-year-old boy was washed away in the swollen Sarayu river as heavy rainfall triggered landslides and waterlogging and damaged infrastructure across the state in the 24 hours till Monday morning, officials said. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued heavy rainfall, issuing an orange alert for parts of the state on Tuesday. The state government on Monday also ordered the temporary suspension of the ongoing Char Dham Yatra pilgrimage due to the inclement weather, which caused blockages at key pilgrimage routes. Officials said Garhwal commissioner Anand Swaroop directed district magistrates and other officials concerned to ensure that pilgrims already on the route were accommodated at safe locations until the roads were declared fit for travel. In Bageshwar district, an eight-year-old boy identified as Rakesh was swept away in the Saryu while performing Jalabhishek at a Shiva temple in Kapkot on Monday. Rescue teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local police have launched an extensive search operation, said officers. Kapkot Circle Officer (CO) Manish Sharma said the boy was a resident of Lahur village and had gone to offer water at the shrine during the holy month of Shravan. "The child lost his balance while standing near the riverbank and was swept away by the strong current of the Saryu River," Sharma said. "We have appealed to devotees and local residents to stay away from riverbanks and avoid entering fast-flowing water bodies, especially during the ongoing monsoon," Sharma said. In Pithoragarh district, 52-year-old Diwan Singh died after being struck by lightning while grazing goats in a forest near Pothila village in Dharchula tehsil on Sunday evening, said officials. In Tehri district,38-year-old Hoshiyar Singh died after his car plunged into a 200-metre-deep gorge on the Pratapnagar-Lambgaon road near Kholgarh village on Sunday evening. Multiple instances of damage to public and private property were also reported. The Yamunotri National Highway was temporarily blocked after multiple landslides sent massive boulders crashing onto the road at three to four locations between Syanachatti and Durbil in Uttarkashi district early in the day, said officials, adding that traffic was restored by around 10 am. The Gangotri National Highway was also briefly closed after a landslide near Dabrani at early on Monday,said officials. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) cleared the stretch by 7 am, they said. In Chamoli district, heavy rainfall washed sludge and debris into Narayanbagar market, damaging several shops and partially flooding a government ration godown. NK Joshi, district disaster management officer (DDMO), said joint teams from various departments cleared the debris from Narayanbagar market and restored traffic on the Karnaprayag-Simli road and other affected highway stretches without delay. In Dehradun district, a portion of the Mussoorie-Dehradun Highway caved in near the vulnerable Pani Wale Band stretch below Kolhukhet after rain eroded the road's foundation. DDMO Rishabh Kumar, said police cordoned off the affected section and restricted heavy vehicles, while allowing light vehicles to pass in a regulated single lane. Public Works Department (PWD) teams have begun emergency reinforcement work, although persistent rain has slowed restoration efforts. In Pauri district, the Nathukhal-Chuna Maheda motor road and the Kandah-Dhamkeshwar-Bhelgarh-Kathuli motor road remained closed, with restoration work in progress. Deepesh Chandra Kala, local DDMO, said field teams had been deployed to clear all blocked roads and restore connectivity at the earliest. Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has reportedly directed Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan and Disaster Management Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman to closely monitor the situation. As per the chief minister's office, the administration must take immediate action wherever heavy rainfall, landslides, or road blockages occur. He instructed that all relief and rescue teams must remain fully prepared and ensure timely assistance to affected people.
