19-year-old woman raped, murdered in Pratapgarh; one held, one at large
PRAYAGRAJ, April 27 -- A 19-year-old woman was allegedly raped and murdered in a village under the Manikpur police station area of Pratapgarh on Saturday night. Her body was subsequently hung from a tree in what police believe was an attempt to disguise the crime as a suicide. Police have arrested a young man-who is known to the deceased-named Mahendra Sonkar in the case and are searching for another accomplice.
According to police, the young woman was sleeping on the veranda of her house on Saturday night. Around 2 am, her mother discovered she was missing from her cot. The mother initially assumed she had gone out and returned to sleep. When the woman did not return by morning, family members and villagers began searching for her.
Her body was later found hanging from a mango tree, approximately 200 metres from her house. A flag reportedly taken from the nearby Belkhariya Dham shrine had been used to hang the body. Before the police arrived, some villagers brought the body down and informed authorities.
SHO Narendra Singh of Manikpur police station and circle officer (Kunda) Amarnath Gupta reached the scene and noted signs that immediately raised suspicion of sexual assault and murder. Condoms and blood-stained undergarments belonging to the victim were recovered from a nearby location, along with footprints indicating the presence of more than one person. Based on a written complaint filed by the victim's brother, police registered a case of murder against unknown persons and sent the body for a post-mortem examination.
The autopsy report revealed injuries on the woman's private parts, chest, and neck, indicating that she was murdered by suffocation. Forensic slides were prepared to investigate the rape allegations further.
During the investigation, police analysed the call detail records (CDR) of mobile phones used by the family, as the victim did not own a phone. The analysis showed two phone calls made on the victim's father's phone to Mahendra Sonkar, a resident of the same village and community, at around 6 pm and 11 pm on the day of the incident.
Police detained Mahendra Sonkar for questioning. During interrogation, he allegedly confessed to being in contact with the victim and stated that he had gone to the area behind her house late that night along with another youth, identified as Shubham Sonkar. Raids are currently being conducted to arrest the second accused....
