KANPUR, Aug. 13 -- A 19-year-old man allegedly stole jewellery from a house in Kanpur's Jajmau area to arrange money for his elder sister's wedding, police said. He was arrested within 48 hours of the theft. Zafar, a resident of Tadbagia, was arrested from his rented room around 1.30am on Wednesday, said ADCP Shiva Singh. Police recovered the entire stolen haul from him. It included four rings, a pair of earrings, a pair of jhumkas, a broken chain, four bangles, white-metal coins bearing Rs.20 and Rs.1 denominations and a white-metal anklet bell. The theft took place in broad daylight on August 10 at the house of Anees Ahmed in Tadbagia. In her complaint, Ahmed's wife, Sufia, told police that jewellery and other valuables had been stolen from the house. A case was registered and an investigation launched, Singh said. According to police, investigators identified Zafar with the help of local informers and by examining the manner in which the house had been entered. Zafar allegedly climbed from the roof of his own house onto Sufia's roof and used a frying pan to break open a ventilator. He then entered the house and allegedly stole the jewellery. Police said Zafar admitted to the theft during questioning. According to Singh, Zafar told investigators that his father had died and his elder sister's wedding had been fixed. The family was facing a shortage of money for the wedding, he allegedly said, and he could not find a way to arrange the funds. Zafar then decided to steal, police said.
