15kg opium seized from fake army car in Manipur
Imphal, June 15 -- A 45-year-old man was arrested for carrying suspected opium concealed in a vehicle with fake army credentials in Manipur's Senapati district on Sunday, police said, adding that more than 15 kg of suspected opium was seized in a joint operation.
According to police, the seizure was made at around 9 am at T Khellen check-post by a joint team of Senapati Operation Team (SOT), D-78 CRPF, B-109 QAT CRPF and 16 Assam Rifles under the supervision of superintendent of police (SP) Zaib Shaikh and the arrested driver was identified as Tarkeshwar Singh, a resident of Hijuguri Gaon in Margherita in Assam's Tinsukia district.
An officer said an Innova car with VIP flag post but travelling without any escort vehicle, was intercepted for verification. "It was found that the vehicle was bearing the insignia of Army Brigadier (VIP flag post and one star). While one nameplate mentioned 'ARMY', another one which said 'MINISTRY OF DEFENCE' was also found inside the vehicle," he said.
As the vehicle was travelling without any escort, the security team carried out a search of the vehicle on suspicion. During the search, 17 packets of Opium weighing around 15.350 kg were found concealed in a compartment under the rear right door of the vehicle. On spot verification, it was established that the vehicle as well as the driver didn't belong to the army. The driver used the insignia of the army and the nameplate only for evading police checkings.
The accused was arrested on the spot and the seizure was carried out.
Besides the suspected Opium, the Innova vehicle, two mobile phones, cash Rs.5,000, a PAN card and a voter ID were also seized from the driver's possession, an officer said.
A case has been registered at Senapati Police Station under relevant sections of the NDPS Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the officer added....
