MEERUT, May 31 -- Nearly 15 years after a gruesome double murder, a court in Muzaffarnagar on Saturday sentenced a man to death for killing his lover and her six-year-old son. The court also fined the convict Rs.5 lakh after finding him guilty of the brutal murders and of disposing of the victims' bodies in a forested area. The case dates back to November 2011, when Rajesh Devi, a resident of Salempur village in the Charthawal area, went missing along with her six-year-old son, Himanshu. On November 7, 2011, she left home after telling her family that she was travelling to Roorkee. However, neither she nor her son returned. When Rajesh Devi and her son failed to return, her husband, Suresh, searched for them but was unable to locate either of them. He later filed a missing persons complaint with the police, leading to the launch of an investigation. On November 13, 2011, police recovered the mutilated bodies of a woman and a child from a forest in the Charthawal area. A day later, the bodies were identified as Rajesh Devi and her son Himanshu, prompting police to convert the missing persons case into a murder investigation. During the investigation, police traced the case to Rais alias Rahis alias Zahoor Hasan, a resident of Bareilly district. Investigators found he was allegedly involved in an illicit relationship with Rajesh Devi and, unwilling to continue the relationship despite her alleged pressure to live with him, he is accused of plotting her murder. According to the Additional District Government Counsel (ADGC) Kuldeep Kumar, Rais contacted Rajesh Devi and called her to meet him under a pretext and she arrived with her son. He allegedly took them to a secluded spot near Alawalpur turn in the Charthawal area, where an argument broke out after Rajesh Devi reportedly insisted on living with him and he refused. Investigators said the confrontation escalated when she allegedly grabbed him by the neck. Police said the accused assaulted Rajesh Devi in a fit of rage. After she lost consciousness, he allegedly crushed her head with a brick. He then murdered six-year-old Himanshu in the same manner by smashing his head with a brick. Rais was arrested on December 11, 2011, and sent to jail. Additional Sessions Judge Fast Track Court-3, Ravi Kumar Diwakar, found Rais alias Rahis alias Zahoor Hasan guilty of the double murder....
