14-yr-old girl set on fire after resisting abuse; probe on
PRAYAGRAJ, June 7 -- Police have launched an investigation after a 14-year-old girl from the Shivkuti area alleged that her uncle set her on fire after she resisted his repeated abuse. According to a complaint filed by the victim's elder brother, the girl and her younger brother had been living with their uncle and aunt since the death of their parents. Her elder brother lives separately in Rajapur.
The incident allegedly took place on May 29. The girl's aunt reportedly informed her brother by telephone that the teenager had poured kerosene on herself and caught fire. When he reached the house, he found her with severe burns on her face, chest and hands. He and his younger brother rushed her to SRN Hospital for treatment. After regaining consciousness five days later, the girl allegedly told her brother that her uncle had been harassing and abusing her for a long time. She claimed that she was often beaten when she resisted or complained. She also alleged that her aunt asked her to remain silent.
The brother alleged that on the day of the incident, the uncle poured kerosene on the girl and set her ablaze, while the aunt supported him. He recorded the victim's statement on his mobile phone before approaching the police.
A sub-inspector later visited the hospital and recorded the girl's statement. Shivkuti SHO Virendra Singh Yadav said the incident had not been reported earlier and that an inquiry was underway. htc...
