12-km Snarl as Twin Crashes Jam GGM-Delhi expressway
Gurugram, June 24 -- Two accidents on the Delhi-Gurugram corridor triggered a 12km-long traffic jam on Tuesday morning, trapping commuters in their vehicles for hours.
The two accidents - the first, a collision involving two buses and the second, an overturned truck, both in the Rajokri area of south-west Delhi - effectively created two bottlenecks, sparking traffic on the Delhi-Jaipur Expressway and adjoining arterial roads.
By noon, traffic slowed to a crawl from the Kherki Daula-Sirhaul stretch, with motorists reporting delays of up to an hour. Traffic congestion was also reported at several key junctions in Gurugram, including Atlas Chowk, IFFCO Chowk and Signature Tower, said traffic police personnel.
"The major impact was felt in the Delhi area. We had deployed teams at major intersections to regulate traffic and prevent spillover congestion on city roads. We are coordinating with our counterparts in Delhi," Mahavir Singh, Gurugram's traffic inspector, highway, told HT.
A senior Delhi traffic police official confirmed the incident.
"We received reports of accidents in the area. Cranes were pressed into service to remove the damaged vehicles and clear the carriageway," said the official, who asked not to be named.
The vehicles and buses were removed by 11.30pm and the snarl began to ease by 1pm. The congestion cleared completely by around 2.30pm, said traffic police.
The Delhi-Gurugram Expressway is among the busiest intercity routes in the National Capital Region, carrying thousands of office-goers, commercial vehicles and airport-bound traffic every day....
