Imphal, June 14 -- One man was killed and two other men were injured in a fresh gunfight near Langka Naga village in Manipur's Kangpokpi district on Saturday, police officers aware of the matter said. All three of them belong to the Kuki community, they added. Officers said that the incident took place around 8.30 am, when a group of men allegedly opened fire on farmers working in paddy fields near the village. Village guards retaliated, triggering an exchange of fire that lasted nearly four hours, said a senior police officer requesting anonymity. The officer added that three of the alleged attackers sustained bullet injuries during the gunfight. "One of them, identified as Jangngam Hangshing of Lhouthang village in Kangpokpi district, later died. The injured were identified as Lalminlen Lhouvum and Thanguhou Kipgen. They are undergoing treatment," the officer said. Villagers alleged that the attackers fired from the nearby hills while farmers were working in the fields. "We managed to save ourselves and there were no casualties among the farmers. However, one buffalo and a domestic dog succumbed to bullet injuries," a villager said on condition of anonymity. In a statement, the Langka (Taniuluang) Village Authority alleged the attack was carried out by cadres of the Kuki National Front (Presidential), or KNF(P), a signatory to the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with the government. The statement added, "The Kuki terrorist camp at Bileijang village, where the non-SoO militant group KNF (Nehlun), a proxy of the KNF(P) SoO group, is based, is commanded by KNF(P) home secretary Jangboi Kipgen, who is also the unified commander of all Kuki militants in Kangpokpi district under both the SoO and non-SoO arrangements. They are responsible for the attack on Langka Naga Village." The village authority urged the state government to take appropriate action against those responsible. The fresh violence comes amid heightened tensions following the recovery of the bodies of six Naga villagers on Wednesday. Reacting to the developments, Kuki Students Organisation (KSO) said in a statement, "We express profound anguish over the brutal killing of Jangngam Hangshing, who attended martyrdom while carrying out his duty in service of the Kuki-Zo people."...
