1,468 voters get tribunal nod, to cast their vote
New Delhi, April 29 -- Altogether 1,468 people, who have been added to the West Bengal electoral rolls following the SIR-linked tribunal orders, will be able to exercise their franchise in the second and final phase of the assembly polls on April 29, an EC official said on Tuesday.According to the Election Commission, voters whose names appear in the supplementary roll can check details by entering their EPIC number on its website.
Of the 2.7 million voters deleted by judicial officers, only 1,609 names were restored across the entire election cycle: 2 were cleared before the nomination deadline, 139 before Phase 1 on April 23, and 1,468 before Phase 2 on April 29.
The 1,609 restored names represent just 0.006% of the 2.7 million judicially deleted voters eligible for tribunal appeals, and 0.002% of the total 9 million voters deleted across West Bengal under the SIR exercise.
West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal said, "Voters whose names were deleted by judicial officers can continue to approach the appellate tribunals, they will be included in a future voter list - though not for this election cycle. Once the Model Code of Conduct is lifted, the electoral roll will be reopened for revision and names cleared by tribunals will be restored"....
