New Delhi, Sept. 22 -- The Delhi High Court on Monday refused to entertain a petition seeking an FIR and CBI probe into the alleged discovery of unaccounted cash at the official residence of former Allahabad High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma, calling the plea a "wild witch hunt". A bench of Justice Amit Bansal permitted petitioner Ghanshyam Upadhayay to withdraw his plea seeking an FIR and constitution of an SIT to probe the alleged recovery of cash from Varma's Delhi residence in March 2025. Upadhayay argued that a three-member in-house inquiry committee had found merit in all three charges against Varma, following which he sought registration of an FIR but received no response. The charges related to the discovery and possession of unexplained Indian currency notes, including burnt, half-burnt, wet and scattered Rs.500 notes, inside the storeroom of Varma's official residence; failure to preserve material evidence and interference with the scene and evidence after the March 14, 2025, fire; and furnishing "evasive, shifting, and misleading" explanations about the incident and the origin, source or ownership of the cash. The Centre, CBI and Delhi Police, represented by standing counsel Premtosh Kumar Mishra, opposed the plea, arguing that Upadhayay had no locus. He had earlier approached the Supreme Court with a similar plea, which was dismissed without liberty to approach the High Court. Justice Varma had denied knowledge or ownership of the cash and called the allegations a conspiracy to malign him.
