'UP transport department emerges as model of digital governance'
LUCKNOW, June 20 -- The Uttar Pradesh transport department has emerged as a major example of digital governance under chief minister Yogi Adityanath, with extensive use of technology making services more transparent, efficient and citizen-friendly, claimed a government official here on Friday.
According to official data, the department is now digitally managing over 5.30 crore registered vehicles across the state through the VAHAN and SARATHI platforms.
These include 34.76 lakh commercial vehicles and 4.95 crore private vehicles, enabling streamlined registration, licensing and tax-related services.
"Lucknow's Transport Nagar Regional Transport Office (RTO) tops the state in vehicle registrations with 32.49 lakh vehicles, followed by Prayagraj, Kanpur Nagar, Agra and Varanasi," the spokesperson said.
The state has also recorded significant progress in the issuance of driving licences, with more than 2.99 crore new licences issued so far.
Lucknow leads the list with 13.66 lakh licences, followed by Ghaziabad, Meerut, Kanpur Nagar and Prayagraj.
The department has also issued over 29.05 lakh transport (commercial) driving licences.
"As part of governance reforms, 49 transport services are now available in faceless and contactless mode through online platforms, reducing office visits and improving transparency, convenience and service delivery," transport commissioner Ashutosh Niranjan said.
