LUCKNOW, Aug. 28 -- A 50-year-old woman from Indira Nagar died reportedly of 'swine flu' at Balrampur Hospital here on Thursday, the first such case of the season in the state capital. The woman had developed cold, fever and breathing difficulties a few days before her condition deteriorated. Her family initially took her to a private hospital, but she showed no significant improvement. She was admitted to Balrampur Hospital on August 25. Doctors suspected H1N1 infection based on her symptoms and ordered tests. The report was said to have confirmed 'swine flu'. Her respiratory condition subsequently worsened and she was placed on oxygen and other life-support measures. Despite treatment, she died around 2.30pm on Thursday. Despite repeated calls, no official was available to confirm swine flu as the cause of death. The death prompted the health department to intensify surveillance in the area and investigate the possible source of infection. A health department team will collect details of the woman's recent travel, movements and close contacts. Her family members have been advised to remain in isolation as a precaution and have been provided medicines. Close contacts will be monitored for symptoms.
